CUTTING EDGE: TRAPPED BY MY TWIN

Twins are special. But what if their special bond means they can’t live separate lives? And that they’re not free to love anybody else? Liesbeth and Angelique were born identical - which means they share 100% of their DNA. Emotionally, they have never quite separated. They share their lives; and their food, to the very last crumb, trying to be exactly the same. Now Liesbeth wants to leave, but she worries what Angelique will do without her.

In a stylish and original film, Cutting Edge takes an intimate look at the emotional complexity and depression that can arise from such a close, competitive - and loving - sibling relationship. Angelique gave up a career as a fashion designer working for Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris to be with her sister. But their mutual bond and love came with a downside as Angelique almost died from anorexia and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in the Netherlands. Cutting Edge joins the twins as they strive for control of their lives, intimately following their constant struggles with their complex relationship.

Liesbeth and Angelique have strict rules to eat and exercise exactly the same as each other to prevent a return to anorexia. Every mealtime is a complex negotiation, often escalating into heated argument. At 35 years old, neither sister has had a relationship with a man. But now Liesbeth meets a man on the internet, who she thinks could be her perfect partner. She wants to start her relationship with him alone - without Angelique - but worries that, left alone, Angelique could commit suicide.

Award-winning director Agnieszka Piotrowska has secured unique access to the twins, capturing a real sense their lives. They fight about their food but in truth this is a battle for control of their lives and in the end for life itself. This is a film about compulsive but destructive love between the twins, and about the horrendous threat of eating disorders fuelled by twin rivarly.
