Dales Supermarket Sweep Is Back! ITV

Monday 13 August 2007 12:30pm - 1:00pm on ITV1.

The doors are opening again on the cult gameshow Dale’s Supermarket Sweep. The show was last on screen earlier this year, and before that was previously on in 2000, and many viewers will remember Dale Winton’s famous catchphrase: “Next time you’re at the checkout and hear the beep, think of the fun you could be having on Supermarket Sweep”.

Once again Dale will be testing the contestants’ knowledge of the supermarket shelves before they are sent down the aisles on a high speed trolley dash in pursuit of the jackpot. There are over 1,500 different product lines in the Supermarket Sweep store, all the tills are fully functioning and everything is scanned by genuine barcodes.

Dale says: “I’m so pleased the show is back. Who would have thought that a little daytime show set in a supermarket would become a ‘classic’ gameshow.”

“I think everyone loves the show as it has the ultimate end game. What could be better than a trolley dash for a handful of cash!”

The original series in the UK resulted in international interest in the format and resulted in versions being produced in Australia, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and, unexpectedly, various South American countries. It was never commissioned in France as broadcasters didn’t think supermarkets were part of French culture.

The show was first produced in the US in the 1950s, when supermarkets were a novelty. The show was filmed on location in a different new supermarket every week. The contestants wore evening dress. The ladies answered the shopping questions. Their husbands did the trolley dashes. A nurse checked their pulses at the end of each round as it was considered quite reckless at the time.

This series was recorded at Maidstone Studios as there are few studios left in the country large enough to hold the supermarket which took two weeks to build and stock.
