The voice of The Only Way Is Essex, Denise Van Outen, has been approached by bosses at the BBC regarding a possible part for her in EastEnders, the Mirror newspaper has revealed.
This wouldn’t be the first time that the Essex born former Big Breakfast presenter, who is married to fellow actor, Lee Mead, has been approached by the show, with producers having previously offered her the part of Johnny Allen’s wife back in 2005, a part she turned down at the time to take a part in ITV’s Where The Heart Is instead.
A source close to Van Outen confirmed to paper: “Her agent has met with the EastEnders casting department to discuss a potential move and the conversation was very positive.”
Van Outen is said to be extremely excited about this, and hopes that the talks she is currently in regarding the role develop into a casting, having said that starring in the show is something she has “always wanted to do”.
Speaking to the paper at the British Soap Awards last week, she said: “I’d love to be in a soap at some point. There have been conversations quite recently but I can’t really say more. It’s one of the things which I have never done which is on a list of things I have always wanted to do.
“I know quite a few people at EastEnders because I went to school with Nicola Stapleton and Samantha Womack. I’m also best friends with Chris Parker who was in EastEnders.
“So I kind of know how it all runs and I love soaps, especially EastEnders. I know what I’m letting myself in for – hard work.”
Van Outen has revealed that she feels the time is ready to take on a soap role, as long as it can be worked into her’s and husbands busy schedule, and with the child care arrangements for her daughter, two-year old Betsy.
She said: “It wouldn’t really daunt me to have hard storylines because I think that’s a challenge that you would want to take on if you are doing something like that. As an actress that’s part and parcel of what you do and you would want a challenging storyline.
“We would need to discuss how I would combine my work with my home life, because at the moment I really do love being able to work and spend time with Betsy.
“Lee’s an actor as well so it’s about finding that balance to make sure that one of us is around for Betsy.”
An Eastnders spokesperson said: “EastEnders regularly talks to numerous actors about upcoming roles.”
