The general consensus seems to be that Dexter will be drawing to an end after the next season, but the star of the show says fans shouldn’t get too despondent just yet.
Michael C. Hall is currently filming the seventh season of the hit serial killer drama, in which he is dealing with his sister Deb’s reaction to the fact that he is a cold blooded killer.
Showtime entertainment president David Nevins recently confirmed that bosses are working on the assumption that the eighth run will be the last and he told reporters:
“That’s the likely scenario. I’m not making any announcements today, but plans can always change. I think everything has gotten rewired this year in a very interesting way, given that Deb [Jennifer Carpenter] has to deal with who her brother is. We’ll see where that carries us.”
However Hall says nothing is set in stone and speaking at the TCA press tour he mused:
“It is very difficult in the midst of shooting this seventh season, where we have some sort of at least vague sense that the final episode of the eighth will be the last, to imagine it going beyond that much.
However he did concede:
“But you know when we finished the first season, I thought we should probably just stop, I thought ‘what are we going to do now?’ ”
“I would never say never, but I think the sense is that we’re moving towards a definitive end.”
“Dexter’s” seventh season kicks off on Showtime on Sunday, Sept. 30, UK viewers will have to wait until early 2013 to view the new season.
During the panel, Hall and his co-star Jennifer Carpenter also responded to criticism that season 6 was the poorest to air yet. Carpenter said, “If you had asked that question before we shot a single frame this season, it might have hurt my feelings… I’m really excited about showing you what we’ve done.”
“Whatever your opinion about the ranking the seasons, Dexter is never more compelling than when he is in trouble,” Hall added, claiming that the upcoming season would top the previous installment. “And he’s never been in deeper trouble than he is now.”
