After much speculation it has finally been confirmed that hit US drama series, Dexter, will come to a final conclusion at the end of the eighth series.
This announcement, which had been widely expected, was made on its network Facebook page, along with a new promo trailer from the final series. The 40-second clip features the names of all of Dexter Morgan’s victims, as well as innocents who have died as a result of his actions.
Dexter centres on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter pattern analyst for a fictional Miami Metro Police Department (based on the real life Miami-Dade Police Department) who also leads a secret life as a serial killer.
Rumours began circulating widely that she show was coming to an end some time ago, and even the cast weren’t optimistic about the shows future, with Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Dexter’s foster sister Deb, commenting to Digital Spy last year that she was only filming up to series 8, and that she did not expect the show to produce a ninth series.
Meanwhile, Michael C Hall, who plays Dexter, had teased that the show might not have the happiest of endings, commenting:
“I imagine Dexter is going to get caught one way or the other. And by that I mean, can we really expect him, at this point, to walk into the sunset? Or get off without a blemish on his conscience or character?”
Meanwhile, those reportedly signed up for the last series include Bethany Joy Lenz (One Tree Hill), Darri Ingolfsson (Last Resort), Nick Gomez (The Walking Dead), Sean Patrick Flanery (The Boondock Saints) and English actress Charlotte Rampling.
