DISPATCHES: HEAT OR EAT: THE PENSIONERS’ DILEMMA

Monday 4 February 2008

Dispatches has discovered that the government, despite its promises, is failing the elderly across Britain. With energy prices soaring, its provision to make sure that they’re warm and properly cared for in winter is becoming more and more inadequate. At the same time it is impoverishing the elderly and their families, who increasingly have to pay for basic social services. Dispatches reveals what life is like for elderly men and women forced to live on today’s state pension and deal with the complexities of the government’s means-tested benefits to keep body and soul together.

It’s disgusting what the british government is doing to the people of this country!
Government can afford to throw away £21+ Million per year on children who don’t even live in this country to foreigners!
Our pensioners, and one day,US, are left to starve and go to jail for not paying poll taxes. It’s a really insane setup, and nobody does anything to stop it or harrass the government and demend why all this is allowed to go on, Labour is the worst thing to happen to this country, Labour isn’t on the side of the people at all.
Next time the elections come up, don’t vote labour, conservative! instead vote the green party, anything is better than what we have.
Costs of food and heating are through the roof because of an illegal invasion!
    They’re sick!

I don’t know about your immigration argument, but I will admit that last nights programme did scare me a lot. It makes you wonder what your life will be like in years to come.

It’s ok for the government ministers who make these decisions, they will never have to live on a basic state pension, so their lack of action and bad decisions will never affect them.

I have just watched a repeat of your programme,my heart goes out to all people who are in a position like that.We are all forced to listen to all in Westminster spouting about how lucky we are.well Tony and Gordon I promise you that if I ever get hold of a copy of that TV programme I will send it to you both. That was bloody shocking, and Labour is in power, brag about that,I dont think you even know.

I would just like to point out to everyone that a recurring theme during the programme was that pensioners were unable to afford vital energy. Don’t vote for any of the main parties or the Green Party; they all subscribe to KYOTO: the EU’s massive and unnecessary tax on greenhouse gases. If it wasn’t for Labour breaking their backs to go over and above KYOTO, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
