It seems natural for any actor who has played the iconic part of Doctor Who to form a deep bond with the character, and it would certainly seem that Matt Smith is no exception.
Matt Smith, who was the youngest ever actor to take on the epic role back in 2010 at the tender age of just 26, announced his decision to leave the globally popular BBC family sci-fi series back in June last year.
Of course before he left he had the huge honour of leading an all-star cast to celebrate the shows landmark 50th birthday, which included a special episode featuring himself, his predecessor David Tennant, John Hurt playing the War Doctor and a brief cameo from his replacement, Peter Capaldi.
Capaldi was announced as the 12th Time Lord back in September last year, after months of speculation, and received a much different reaction from fans than the lukewarm reception Smith had when he was appointed the part.
Since then Smith has made several statements almost sounding like he regrets his decision to leave so soon even having admitted that he would have liked to have stayed for a few more years after all.
Not only that but Smith has even revealed that he hopes writers do not write in any scenes between Capaldi’s Doctor and River Song (Alex Kingston) claiming her to be his wife, and his alone.
Now it would seem that before his departure Smith ash also had a word with Capaldi and told him, the way a regretful ex tells his replacement, to look after the character.
Capaldi recently took time out of his busy schedule to talk to a young autistic girl to reassure her that he will take care of the iconic character, as well as telling her that he had told Smith the same, explaining:
“Matt was really nice to me, as Jenna was too. They were both very welcoming to me when I came into the TARDIS. Matt said to me to look after Doctor Who and he gave me his watch and he said that in his own way he was happy that it was me that was coming in. So I will do my very best to be as much fun and as friendly as he is… I will be different.
“So they say it’s OK for me to be the Doctor. I hope that you think it would be OK for me to be the Doctor too… I might be a bit noisy at first!”
Ahh, isn’t he the cutest?
Doctor Who is currently filming its 8th series in Cardiff, with a view to being broadcast, with Capaldi at the Tardis helm for the first time, either in late summer or early autumn.
