One of the men who was named a front runner in the race to replace Matt Smith in Doctor Who has come out to praise the winner!
When 11th Time Lord Matt Smith announced his decision to leave the hugely and globally popular BBC family sci-fi series last June, many a name was thrown into the ring with regards to who could replace him.
One of the most likely suggestions was Sean Pertwee, who is the son of third Doctor, the late great John Pertwee!
Given the family connection Pertwee the second seemed a perfect candidate, well more perfect than Paris Jackson who nominated herself for the role anyway, but the prize was eventually given to The Thick Of It Star Peter Capaldi.
But Pertwee isn’t bitter, in fact he has nothing but praise for the Scottish actor, who Pertwee has been working with on the current BBC period drama The Musketeers!
Discussing Capaldi, and his new appointment, in a recent interview Pertwee said that Capaldi would be “stupendous” in the role as well as revealing that his father, who played the Time Lord from 1970 – 1974, thought the world of him too, adding:
“Peter is an extremely lovely gentleman. He was very kind to my family when my father passed away, he was big fan of my dad’s actually.
“So personally the Pertwee household were absolutely delighted when he got the role of The Doctor.”
Pertwee then went on to express his views that Capaldi’s age, which is considerably older than his predecessor Matt Smith who landed the role at the tender age of just 26, would help to enhance the role, whilst insisting:
“Taking nothing away from Matt (Smith), who I thought was great, I just think he’s going to stupendous. He’s going to have a completely different look.
“He’s such a phenomenal actor anyway I think he’ll be absolutely brilliant. I’m delighted he’s doing it.”
Peter Capaldi is currently filming for the eighth series of Doctor Who in Cardiff, which will see him in his full show debut since his eyes were featured in the 50th anniversary special, and he then regenerated from Smith in the Christmas Day episode.
The new series is expected to air in the UK either at the end of this summer, or early autumn.
