Doctor Who bosses have revealed that the Time Lord will come up against a familiar enemy this year – The Ice Warriors!
Fans of Doctor Who can expect many a surprise from the hit BBC family sci-fi entertainment show in this it’s 50th anniversary year, with many returning characters popping up to help with the celebrations.
However, where smart people’s money would have been on the Weeping Angels or Cybermen making appearances, it would seem that this latest revelation has left the fans a bit shocked.
The Ice Warriors, a herbivore reptile race from Mars, were first seen on the show back in the 1960’s and proved to be incredibly predatory to the human race.
Whilst not as conventionally popular as say the Daleks, The Ice warriors are apparently a firm favourite of show writer, Mark Gattis, who revealed last month their return to face the current Time Lord, Matt Smith during the new series, which is due to begin at the end of this month.
A show insider reportedly told SFX:
“We wanted to bring them [the Ice Warriors] back because they’re wonderful. In the mix of stories that we were planning for this year it felt as if doing something very bold with a monster that hadn’t been seen for a while would be really cool.”
“Mark is an enormous fan of the Ice Warrior stories and came up with the idea. The sense of a monster of that scale and that size trapped in a really small, contained environment such as a submarine was a really brilliant story to be able to tell.”
“They were such a beautiful original design, and are genuinely really scary in terms of what they look like as they’re coming towards you in that armour.”
