And a recent poll – in which fans were asked who they’d like to see playing the Doctor in the film version – by IGN has revealed that viewers would most like to see House actor Hugh Laurie land the part.
What’s On TV report that Hugh – who’s no stranger to film roles, given he’s starred in Sense and Sensibility, 101 Dalmatians, The Borrowers, Flight of the Phoenix, Monsters vs. Aliens, and three Stuart Little films – beat off stiff competition from the likes of Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Ewan McGregor in a poll of around 7,000 fans.
Chris Tilly, IGN’s website’s entertainment editor, said, “As one of the UK’s most celebrated TV characters of all-time, fans are thrilled about the prospect of a Doctor Who movie, with talk immediately turning to who should play the lead role.
“And with his combination of wit, intelligence, charm and eccentricity, Hugh Laurie was the runaway winner of our poll, with fans believing the Brit to be the perfect man to play the Time Lord on the big screen.”
Of the movie, Yates told Variety that he expects it to be two to three years in the making, and that it would be unlikely to feature Matt Smith – who is of course the current Time Lord – in the role of the Doctor.
Yates added, “It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.”
Would Hugh be your choice? And if not, who would you like to see playing the Doctor in the movie?
In the meantime, here’s a clip of Hugh singing with Jamie Cullum at this year’s Children In Need Rocks concert…
