It’s been a big news day for Doctor Who fans!
It was confirmed earlier today that the new series of the show will kick off on the 1st of September at 7:20pm and the show will end at 8:10pm, meaning it will only clash with ITV juggernaut The X factor for a short ten minute period.
Meanwhile, it was confirmed some time ago that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill (Amy Pond and Rory Williams) would be making their exit from the show this series and it seems they already have a new job lined up.
It has been confirmed this evening that the pair will be starring in their own five part spinoff series titled ‘Pond Life.’
The show will air online and will start ahead of the sci-fi drama’s return to BBC1 on Monday 27th August. A new episode will be uploaded to the BBC website each day until Doctor Who kicks off on Saturday, at which point they will all be made available via the BBC’s red button service.
The series will be penned by Doctor Who and Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall, and will look into how Amy and Rory are affected as the titular timelord drops in and out of their lives at will.
Chibnall said: ‘Pond Life provides us with a lovely opportunity to catch-up with Amy and Rory since we saw them at the end of the last series.
“It opens with the Ponds at home and gives us an insight in to just what happens when the Doctor drops in and out of their lives. Travelling with the Doctor is one of the greatest things you can do, but it’s fun to spend a few moments looking at the chaos he can also bring.’
Executive producer Caroline Skinner added:
“Chris has written a beautiful, heartfelt and wickedly funny piece about the adventures the Ponds have been having with the Doctor since we last saw them on-screen.
“It’s not long till the series itself will be back with a vengeance – but in the meantime, Pond Life is a truly heart-warming piece about our best-loved companions and their madcap relationship with their raggedy Doctor.”
