Doctor Who: Richard E Grant and Tom Ward to star opposite Matt Smith in this year’s Christmas special?

by Anna Howell

We were waiting anxiously for the news after the rveelation that this year’s Christmas Doctor Who star would be revealed at midnight and true to their word, the BBC have spilled the beans.

It was announced this morning that British actor Richard E Grant will be joining Matt Smith in this year’s festive special, along with Silent Witness actor Tom Ward.

Grant is best known for his roles in ‘Withnail and I,’ ‘Gosford Park’ and ‘The Iron Lady’ but to us he will always be that posh guy who was silly enough to star in the Spice Girls movie.

Ward is chiefly known for his role as Dr. Harry Cunningham in the long-running forensic drama series, Silent Witness, however he has many more strings to his bow, being a talented singer, dancer and saxophone player, who once fenced for Britain. These are all skills we could see him using in the hit BBC show in one way or another.

Richard is of course no stranger to Doctor Who. In fact it will be his third convection with the series, having provided the voice of the central character in an animated webcast of the show in 2003, Grant also played The Doctor himself during a Comic Relief special titled Doctor Who And The Curse Of Fatal Death in 1999. In the sketch he played a womanising version of the titular Time Lord.

He follows in the footsteps of Kylie Minogue, Michael Gambon, Katherine Jenkins and David Morrissey, who have all starred in the special festive episodes in recent years.

An insider told The Sun: “The Doctor Who Christmas specials are famous for being stand-out episodes and this year’s will be no different.

“It will have a really festive feel and Richard will be great as a baddie.”

Grant said: “I played Doctor Who in the digital animated Scream Of The Shalka episode and I’m honoured to be in the Christmas special.”

The special will be directed by Upstairs Downstairs maker Saul Metzstein and will be filmed very soon in Cardiff.

The new series of the show will launch later this month and we have LOADS of spoilers, check them out here and let us know what you think of Steven Moffat’s most recent castings below…
