Does anyone find Gavin & Stacey funny??

As happens over Christmas, I missed a lot of the shows I wanted to watch so last night, I finally got a chance to catch up on a few things and one of them was the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special; what a load of …. you fill in the blanks.
I’ve never seen the show before but the trailers for it looked very funny, however the reality was far from it. There were a few funny moments but they were far outweighed by the ludicrous characterisation.
What’s Nessa about?? How is she supposed to be anything like a real person? She really was too ridiculous to watch and was without doubt was the low point of the whole show for me.
The high point was Gwen’s neighbour, Doris, telling Gwen and Bryn that she was very drunk but she put it far more colourfully. You can see it here right at the beginning of the clip but be warned, it contains swearing…
The next funny moment occurred in the same clip at about 5.22 mins in, during a scene where Bryn and Gwen are extolling the virtues of Mint Bailey’s. And the last amusing scene was when Edna – elderly mum from next door – popped up from behind the bar and Alison Steadman’s character, Pam, rolled up a magazine as a weapon because the old lady bites… here’s a clip from that scene which is 8 mins in.
But that was it. I didn’t find anything else in the whole show giggleworthy at all. I was very disappointed in it other than the brilliant acting on the parts of Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman.
What did you think of it and if you’re a fan, is the rest of the show that dire or does it get funnier?

I have to confess I do find it funny even though I find James Corden irritating both in and out of ‘character’.I especially hang on for the thoughts of Bryn and the ongoing lack of full information as to what really happened on that fishing trip.I do find the stereotypes all too keenly observed though I do think they could easily not make another series ever again and for many (but not all) of the main characters I wouldn’t much care.
best programme ever. this was the first episode i have ever seen and Rob Brydon is a LEGEND! All christmas all as I’ve been saying is ‘Kim Cattral is a HOOT’ and ‘the DVD features are out of this world!’ in my best welsh accent.
Such a funny, good programme, i’m buying the first 2 series. Nessa is so funny, she’s a man but quite sexual too and James Cordon is just playing himself really isn’t he?
ps, hello my name’s Bryn… it means hill in Welsh.
The Christmas Special was alright but didn’t move any plot points very much further forward. Also the jokes are becoming repetitive.
Lastly, Gavin and Stacey themselves had so little to do they could have not bothered turning up with much the same result.A few minutes sulking by Smithy and the mum about Gavin’s new (6 month) job and that was it really. They are now bit players in the show named after them. All too clear who the writers are….
Overall a pleasant show but not enough happened and the catch-phrases are becoming very irritating.
I have to agree totally with this, it’s complete…
I really don’t get what all the fuss is about. I love British comedy but this really isn’t it!
i love it, i live in usa now and when i came home for christmas
caught up with the series…it has me in stitches, maybe because i an identify with a couple of the characters, im told im quite like Pam in real life…(insult or compliment im not sure)
