Is Downton Abbey headed for Golden Globe success again?

by Anna Howell

ITV’s epic period drama, Downton Abbey, looks like it might be set to repeat last year’s Golden Globes success as it picks up a handful of nominations for this year’s awards.

Nominated for the best television drama series award, up against some of the biggest US shows including Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Homeland, Downton also has nominations for two of its female stars, Dame Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery, who have been shortlisted for best supporting actress in a miniseries or motion picture made for TV and best actress in a television drama series respectively.

Downton Executive producer Gareth Neame said of the honour: “We’re thrilled that once again Downton has been nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press, this year in the highly competitive drama series category which places us in competition with the best shows on American television. And I am delighted that Michelle Dockery and Maggie Smith have again been recognised for their stunning performances in the show.

“This continued run of success for Downton in the US awards demonstrates the affection for the show in America and shows that British writing, acting and production can match the very best of Hollywood.”

The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards, voted for by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be held in Los Angeles on January 13, and will be hosted by US stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – replacing Ricky Gervais after three years as host.

Last year Downton scooped the prize for best television miniseries, and this year it is not the only British export to be recognised as Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch has also been nominated for the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
