Downton Abbey season 4 spoilers: Fourth season to premiere on PBS in January 2014


Season 4 of Downton Abbey will premiere stateside on PBS in early 2014, it has been revealed.

The period drama – which everyone seemingly loves in the states – will premiere on PBS on January 5th, 2014 and will run for 8 weeks before concluding on February 23rd.

Fan favourites such as Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle and Jim Carter will all be returning as series regulars. Meanwhile, the likes of Shirley MacLaine, Nigel Harman and Joanna David will return as guest stars throughout the fourth season.

Unfortunately, Dan Stevens, who played Lady Mary’s husband, Matthew Crawley will not be returning for the fourth run.


Speaking to the Telegraph, he said: “We were always optioned for three years and when that came up it was a very difficult decision. But, it felt like a good time to take stock, to take a moment. From a personal point of view, I wanted a chance to do other things”.

We also know that the fourth season will see the first black character introduced into the cast. Death in Paradise actor, Gary Carr will be the first black actor to feature in the period drama, in which he will place a “charming and charismatic” musician.


Gary is just one in a line of new characters joining the cast this year, with the likes of Miranda’s Tom Cullen and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa featuring in the upcoming season.

Lady Mary Crawley will also have a new love interest, it has been teased.

Downton Abbey season 4 will premiere in the UK this fall.
