With filming underway for the much-anticipated fourth series of the hit ITV period drama, Downton Abbey, one of its stars, Joanne Froggatt has revealed that she thinks that the audience are in for a surprise when it hits our screens later this year.

Downton Abbey warmed the hearts of millions across the world with since it began in 2010 with its tale of aristocratic life in the early 1900’s, but many felt worried for its return for series four this year after the departure of 3 of its main stars.

First was the sudden and unexpected death of Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay) mid series after giving birth to her first born child, followed a few episodes later by the very similar death of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) shortly after his wife, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) gave birth to his first born son and heir – a decision out of the writers hands somewhat as Stevens had decided not to renew his contract.

Then, just as filming was about to begin, the announcement that Siobhan Finneran, who played Ladies Maid O’Brien, had also quit ahead of the new series, left many wondering what the future held for our beloved Downton Abbey.

But fear not, as Joanne Froggat, who plays Ladies Maid Anna Bates, has revealed that the new scripts are “really, really fantastic” and that the show has “upped its game”.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, Froggatt explained:

“We’ve just started filming the fourth season. We’ve been filming for about a month so we’ve got a long way to go.

“I’m really excited about it. I think this year, the scripts are really, really fantastic. I think it’s upped its game again. There’s certainly quite a few surprises this year. Hopefully people will love it!”

Meanwhile Finneran has been discussing her time on the show, telling The Mirror newspaper in a recent interview:

“I actually have great fun being sniffy to everyone. I love O’Brien the most when she’s spiteful and has a brilliant put-down. She’s a clever lady and a bad enemy to make.”

“O’Brien with a boyfriend would be stupendous! Who would be brave enough to take her on a date? Kevin Doyle, who plays Joseph Molesley, and I are always speculating what our characters would be like on a date – it would be hilarious.”
