As we reported earlier this month, Miranda star Tom Ellis was reportedly being lined up to play the new love interest for Lady Mary Crawley in the new series of the hit ITV period drama, Downton Abbey.
The decision to cast a new suitor for the eldest daughter of the Grantham family came after the untimely death of Lady Mary’s husband, Matthew Crawley, during last year’s Christmas special.
Soon after the decision was confirmed, ITV began casting with no luck in finding someone they thought suitable enough for the part, with the Daily Mail reporting at the time that:
“Some were too dark, some too blond, some too bland — though a couple have been put on a shortlist that the producers and creative people will discuss,
“The main criteria for him is that he should be posh — and pretty.”
Then last week the Sunday Mirror reported that Miranda star, Tom Ellis, who plays Miranda’s love interest, Gary in the hit comedy series, was being lined up for the role, with the publication reporting that an ITV source told them on the subject:
“Tom has always been popular but he has really become hot property since his role as Gary in Miranda.
“He really showed his versatility and he’s also incredibly popular with the female viewers. It was an absolute no-brainer to get him in for an audition.
“We know that Tom’s got a lot of other options at the moment but if he does get the role it will be an incredible opportunity for him. A lot of the current cast have become global superstars.
“And it is always a bit of a coup for us to attract a major BBC star to a flagship ITV show like Downton Abbey.”
This news did not seem to go down well with fans, with many of our viewers leaving comments underneath the article expressing their thoughts on the matter.
However, it would seem that they can now put their mind at rest as Zap2it today reports that a casting conflict means that Tom will not be able to join the cast of Downton Abbey after all.
According to the site Tom, whose previous credits include The Fades and Merlin, has been cast to star in a pilot for a new ABC horror series, called Gothica!
Tom is set to play one of the main roles of Victor Frankenstein in the series that brings together legendary and iconic horror characters such as Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.
Joining him in the series is said to be Chris Egan, whose previous credits include Letters to Juliet, who has been cast as Dorian Gray and Raza Jaffrey who will play a police detective named Harker.
So, the hunt for the new Mr Lady Mary continues it would seem….
