Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle tells fan on Twitter, “Go f**k yourself!” in Margaret Thatcher row!
Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle is not a man who minces his words, as evidenced by a row he got into on Twitter recently, during which he told a user of the social networking site to “Go f**k yourself!”
The drama began when Brendan – who of course plays Mr Bates in ITV’s hit period drama – made barbed remarks on Twitter about former Prime Minister, Lady Margaret Thatcher…
On reading his tweets, NHS consultant Roberta Knighton tweeting him to say his comments were “beneath” him.
Brendan replied, “Hard to know how to respond to that… but go f*** yourself feels about right.”
He then added, “You have no idea what is beneath me… p.s. go f*** yourself x”.
According to TV Biz, he then blocked her from viewing his account.
Roberta told the paper, “He comes across as utterly sweet and gentle then speaks to people like that. I was shocked.”
Brendan, who is currently in Vietnam filming for new film Noble, was “unavailable for comment” last night, however, Stephen Bradley, who’s directing the film, posted to the movie’s official blog to report that Brendan and the rest of the cast were working extremely hard in the heat and humidity.

The crew have really and truly earned a day off. The last week has been grueling and complicated : working in precarious wooden and corrugated-iron huts, built on stilts over the tidal flow of the Saigon river ; moving onto the hectic streets to shoot dialogue inside a car being towed through rush-hour traffic, lights and microphones attached all over ; filming at night under rain machines producing tropical downpours and racing to get the shots before the massive water tankers ran dry.
Fortunately, we achieved all our scenes with constant good humour (well, that’s a lie, but you know what I mean) and a great sense of satisfaction. It is only after such a tough patch in the schedule that the veteran Heads of Department look each other in the eye and wink knowingly. What they are collectively thinking is that we were blessed to get through unscathed and on time…
You can click here to read more of Stephen’s blog, but for now, here’s a look at a recent interview in which Brendan and his co-star Joanne Froggatt, who of course plays his wife Anna, talk about Downton…
