Downton Abbey: Villainous footman Thomas will fall for new male servant, Jimmy Kent! See new trailers! (VIDEOS)

As fans of Downton Abbey will of course know, footman Thomas Barrow is an out and out baddie, and he even shot himself in the hand to ensure he was sent back to the genteel surrounds of Downton Abbey from the front lines in France…

However, Thomas – who is often to be found in league with the equally villainous ladies’ maid Sarah O’Brien (Siobhan Finneran) to plot someone’s downfall – is harbouring a secret; he’s gay, and of course, in Edwardian times, that was a major taboo.

But according to the Daily Mirror, in the forthcoming third series of the show, Thomas, who’s set to become a valet, will fall for new footman Jimmy Kent who’s to be played by Ed Speleers…

Of course, it won’t be the first gay relationship that Thomas has had on the show, as we’ve already seen him having an illicit relationship with the Duke of Crowborough (Charlie Cox). Here’s a reminder…

Thomas also made a pass at visiting Turkish dignitary Kemal Pamuk (Theo James) who, after threatening to tell Thomas’s boss Lord Grantham about his inappropriate behaviour, later died in Lady Mary’s (Michelle Dockery) bed!

But of Thomas’s new love interest, former Corrie star Rob James Collier, who of course plays the devious servant, said, “It’s a very emotional storyline and goes some way to explaining why he is how he is.

“Being a homosexual man in Edwardian times was against God, and you could go to prison for it.

“It’s a burden and the audience will hopefully empathise with him.”

And while Rob wouldn’t definitively confirm that his character’s new lover would be footman Jimmy, he did say, “Thomas takes him under his wing and looks after him.

“Knowing Thomas and knowing he has a preference for a certain type of person in life, I think Jimmy fits that bill perfectly… ”

O man I cannot wait for Downton to be back, and just to whet our appetites, here are the newly released trailers for series three…
