Downton Abbey voted most watched TV programme of the decade!

With this year’s amazing television coming to an end, a poll has been released which names Downton Abbey the best TV programme, not just of this year, but of the entire decade!

The epic ITV period drama, which comes to the end of its third series tonight on ITV1, has captured the hearts of both the UK and US nation, and quickly the most respected, and talked about costume drama of the millennium, and kept us all glued to our TV sets, going into mourning at the end of every series.

And it has proved that by beating some of the biggest names in TV, such as the Inbetweeners and Sherlock, to the top spot as most watched TV show of the decade, in this poll published by the Daily Mirror newspaper!

The epic ITV1 smash hit drama was watched by nine million people and had 11% of votes with The Inbetweeners coming in second with 8%.

And despite us being smack bang in the middle of the reality TV era, The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea had 54% of us reaching for the remotes to turn over for something a bit more palatable!

Another surprising result was that 47% of people taking part in this Freeview poll said they were sick of shows such as X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, according to the paper.

One viewer said: “I love Downton Abbey – it’s complete escapism.

“I can’t stand shows like Made in Chelsea and I’ve had enough of talent shows taking over Saturdays.

“The quality’s dropping and they don’t add much to TV.”

The top ten most watched programmes of the decade are:

1. Downton Abbey; 2. The ­Inbetweeners; 3. Sherlock; 4. The ­Apprentice; 5. The X Factor; 6. Come Dine with Me; 7. Gavin And Stacey; 8. Planet Earth; 9. Dancing on Ice; 10. Doc Martin.
