Downton Abbey: Will the show be nominated for an Emmy again? And Maggie Smith had producer sacked!

Last year, Downton Abbey won an Emmy in the category for Outstanding Miniseries, which beat off competition from top performing dramas Mildred Pierce and Too Big to Fail…

But fail it did, however, Deadline reckon that if Downton are nominated for an Emmy award this year, it’ll be in the category of Outstanding Drama Series, which could see the show in the same category as hit US shows Breaking Bad and Homeland.

Mad Men is also in that category, and has won the award for the last four years running, so it would be something of a shock if Downton toppled it.

The reason for the shift in categories is because the awards are being “downsized” according to Lifetime Networks programming executive Rob Sharenow.

In a recent statement, he explained, “Movies and miniseries represent some of television’s finest programming and it is our firm belief the industry should honour each category separately…”

Well it of course remains to be seen where – and indeed if – Downton comes in the Emmy running, but as Dame Maggie Smith‘s recent demand for the dismissal of one of the show’s producers, Rebecca Eaton, was seen through, she won’t be around to see the result of any Emmy nomination personally.

You may recall that last year, Ms Eaton told the media that Maggie was sometimes “difficult” and “a handful” on the set of the drama, which it seems has gone down like a lead balloon with the lady herself.

According to the Mirror, Dame Maggie – who plays the role of the Dowager Duchess – has told the show’s bosses that she wants Rebecca sacked for the comments she made, and it seems she got her way over it.

An insider told the paper, “Maggie made it clear she no longer wanted to work with [Eaton].

“As a result, Rebecca has been asked to stand down from the third series and have her name taken off the credits.

“Everyone was terrified Maggie would leave if her demands weren’t met.”

A show spokesman added, “The credits for series three aren’t finished but it’s highly likely Rebecca Eaton’s name will appear.”

Downton Abbey – sans Rebecca Eaton – returns in the autumn.
