After we reported yesterday that rumour had it that EastEnders, who are struggling with viewing ratings, was planning on sacking Matt Lapinskas, who plays Anthony Moon in the BBC soap, the news has now been confirmed.
Lapinskas, who is dating Shona McGarty who plays Whitney Dean in real life, is set to depart from the show within the next few weeks, after less than a year of playing the antiques dealer.
Lapinskas joined the cast of EastEnders as Anthony last year, playing the son of Eddie Moon played by David Essex, and the brothers of Tyler (Tony Discipline) and Michael (Steve John Shepherd). His character was always the quieter of the brothers, although he did enjoy a couple of romances as well as a few scrapes, especially when he bet on his brother Tyler to lose a fixed boxing match.
Confirming his exit, the Moon brother commented: “I’m having a fantastic time working on EastEnders and playing the role of Anthony Moon. Working with David Essex, Tony Discipline and the EastEnders cast has been an absolute pleasure.
“Although I will really miss EastEnders and everyone involved, I am very excited about future projects and what is next for me as an actor.”
This news is either a big shock to the actor, or a closely guarded secret, as when we bumped into him at the British Soap Awards, he told us that there were exciting things in the pipeline for his character with regards to romance, and after his escapades with his girlfriend, Shona McGarthy in an Asda yoghurt aisle, we wonder if his departure has been based purely on viewing figures, or whether there is more to this story than meets the eye?
