EastEnders: Charlie G Hawkins discusses Darren Miller’s wedding day exit

by Lynn Connolly

As fans of EastEnders will know, Charlie G. Hawkins is about to leave the show and his role as Darren Miller.

But Darren’s going to leave fiancé Jodie Gold (Kylie Babbington) heartbroken when, after sleeping with Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) on his stag night, Darren’s so consumed with guilt, he can’t go through with the wedding.

Soaplife asked Charlie why Darren sleeps with Lauren, to which Charlie replied, “He thinks that Jodie has had a fling with Anthony and he gets drunk and, well, one thing leads to another.”

And when asked, “How does he feel the next day?” Charlie said, “Terribly guilty. They both wake up at the car lot and are disgusted with each other…

“He wants to get married still, but he can’t see a way forward.”

However, it seems that after Darren and Lauren are spotted by Jodie’s mum Vanessa (Zoe Lucker) the secret’s out, but apparently, Jodie still wants to marry Darren.

Of that, Charlie remarked, “It turns out that she knows all along about Lauren, but still wants to marry him.

“That makes him feel worse because he realises she is a better person than him.

“Sometimes when you love somebody so much, you have to let them go.”

Charlie went on to reveal that Darren decides to leave the Square there and then, but before he does, he drops in on Heather (Cheryl Fergison) to say goodbye to his son George.

When asked why he decided to leave the show, Charlie said, “I was 12 when I started and I’ve been on the show for eight years and decided it was time for fresh challenges.

“I want to experience as much as I can. Meet new people and do new things.”

And finally, when asked if “the door has been left open” for a return, Charlie said, “I don’t think the door is ever shut – Den died and he came back!”
