Following in its biggest rival’s footsteps, EastEnders bosses have been given the go-ahead to build a new set for the popular BBC soap, The Sun newspaper reports!

EastEnders has been on our screens for over a quarter of a decade, and has seen many a change in that time, but one thing that has remained the same is the Square it is filmed on.

But, as Coronation Street discovered recently, the ever-changing pace and technology that goes into filming such a popular and modern soap has outgrown the pre-digital era the original set was built in, meaning that the biggest change the show has seen, a new set, is a must.

Coronation Street up-sticks and moved from its original Granada studios to MediaCity UK in Salford Quays last November, and now it would seem that EastEnders is also getting a new home!

Unlike Corrie, however, the set of BBC EastEnders is not relocating from its current, Elstree studio location, but plans are being put in place to rebuild and expand the current set in a bid to prepare and secure the shows future.

The paper quotes EastEnders Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins as commenting: “This is a really exciting project and firmly demonstrates the BBC’s commitment to the future of EastEnders. We have ambitious plans for the show and the new exterior set will help bring those to life and better reflect the East End of London on screen for audiences.
“The bigger and improved set will increase the potential for storylines, increase quality and meet the demands of future technology requirements.

“Crucially, it will provide a greater sense of scale with more locations for our characters to spend time in, opening up new areas and opportunities that haven’t been possible before – all of which are in the best interest of our viewers.”

The Sun reports that the plans have already been approved by the powers that be at the Beeb and that, as long as planning permissions are granted, work will start quickly in a bid to have the new and improved set, which is estimated to be 20% bigger than now, up and running by 2018!

EastEnders continues Monday at 8pm on BBC1 / BBC1 HD.
