Fans of EastEnders will of course know that Max ‘I Can’t Keep It In My Trousers’ Branning is currently facing the wrath of his daughters Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) and Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) for having seemingly resumed his relationship with his wife Kirsty Branning…
Because of course, when Kirsty first turned up on the Square at Christmas, Max told everybody that he’d married her on the spur of the moment when he was separated from Tanya (Jo Joyner) and though she’s officially his wife, he considered the whole thing a mistake and the marriage was on paper only.
However, now that Tanya has ditched him once again, he’s reunited with Kirsty, and to add insult to injury, he’s staying with her at the B&B on the Square, which is where Abi found them seemingly in flagrante this week…
And though we can’t reveal too much about the storyline as yet, we can tell you that Tanya is coming back to Walford soon, so that should be a fun showdown!
However, Kierston Wareing, who of course plays Kirsty, has told TV Magazine that she thinks Max should go back to Tanya.
She said, “I think Max should be with Tanya — not just because of the kids, they have been together a long time.
“But maybe neither of them should be with him. See you later, Max!
“That’s what should happen in real life: ‘You’ve gone off, you’ve married someone else.’”
However, it would seem her co-star Jake Wood – who’s played the role of Max since 2006 – doesn’t necessarily agree as he revealed last month that he’d like Kierston on-set for a while yet.
He told Inside Soap, “I think Max is capable of loving Tanya and Kirsty at the same time.
“I knew that Max had a secret wife for a year before she arrived, and [series consultant] Simon Ashdown – who shaped the story – worked with me and Kierston to create this bond between them before she appeared on screen.
“We worked out the backstory, so the viewers got a real sense of them having a history together.
“I hope that came across in the first moment they came face-to-face again at Christmas.”
He added, “A lot of people want Max and Tanya to stay together. But I think there’s every possibility Max could end up with Kirsty if Tanya doesn’t want him.
“I don’t know if there’s a future for them, but Kierston is a great addition to our cast – and I hope she’ll be staying for a lot longer.”
What do you think? Would you like to see Max and Tanya back together for good? Or should he stay with Kirsty?
For now, here’s a reminder of Kirsty’s explosive entrance on the show…
