EastEnders: Phil and Sharon get engaged! But can they fool social services? And will Lauren ever stop hitting Joey?! (VIDEO)

As fans of EastEnders will know, Phil Mitchell is currently trying to get custody of his granddaughter Lexi, who is of course in foster care having been taken from her mother Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) when her social worker deemed her unfit to care for the tot.

But given that Phil (Steve McFadden) has something of a chequered past – that’s seen him imprisoned a few times – and that his son Ben, who is of course Lexi’s dad, is currently awaiting trial for the manslaughter of Heather Trott, the Mitchell family is a far cry from the Von Trapps…

So Phil’s dilemma has been how to convince social services that he’s fit to care for Lexi, and having exhausted other options, such as having Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) give a statement about Phil’s suitability as a guardian ad litem, he decided that the way forward was to get engaged to Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) in a bid to prove to the authorities that he can offer stability to the infant.

However, he failed to inform Sharon that that was what he’s doing, and instead, simply had his lawyer Jimmy lie on documents he presented to the court to support his application!

But this week, we’ll see Phil pleading with Sharon to go along with his lie so that little Lexi can come home to Walford, and though she’s initially reluctant to get involved in Phil’s scheming, she eventually relents and agrees to go along with the charade.

However, her boyfriend Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) is understandably not overly impressed with the arrangement, especially when Phil presents Sharon with an engagement ring and impresses upon her the importance of keeping up the pretence, even in front of their neighbours.

So will Sharon be forced to choose between helping her old mate – and former lover – Phil or staying loyal to boyfriend Jack?

And if so, which way will she choose?

Find out on November 5th.

However, before then, there is of course the simmering sexual tension between cousins Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) and Joey Branning (David Witts) playing out, and as we saw last week, when Joey touched a raw nerve by suggesting that Lauren was jealous that he kissed Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) Lauren slapped him round the face…

And in tonight’s trip to Walford, she’s at it again! Here’s a clip…

I guess if they were a few years younger, she’d be pushing him over in the playground, and he’d be pulling her hair. Dang sexual politics…
