It’s been reported today that EastEnders bosses plan to have Phil Mitchell and Shirley Carter getting married on April 29th, which is of course the day that Prince William marries Kate Middleton.

The Mirror reports that Phil and Shirley – who’re played by Steve McFadden and Linda Henry respectively – will become engaged following Phil’s heart attack which viewers saw on Monday night.

However, once he’s recovered, Phil reevaluates what’s important to him, and in scenes that are described as “emotional”, he’ll go down on one knee and propose to Shirley in The Vic…

A show insider told the paper, “The royal wedding is the biggest event of this year and, for soap fans, Phil Mitchell is pretty close to royalty having been a favourite since he arrived in 1990.

“The show’s bosses thought a wedding storyline would be perfect to coincide with William and Kate.”

But it seems there’s trouble ahead for Phil and Shirley before their wedding. The insider added, “Phil’s journey to the altar is riddled with drama, as Glenda threatens to reveal her affair with Phil.”
