EastEnders: Phil Mitchell calls off his engagement to Sharon Rickman! And see behind the scenes of Lauren & Joey’s crash & spoiler clip! (VIDEOS)

Fans of EastEnders will know that Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) railroaded his former lover Sharon Rickman into going through with a sham engagement on the grounds that offering what would appear to be a stable home environment would help his case for custody of his granddaughter, Lexi…

However, understandably, Sharon’s real boyfriend Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) wasn’t overjoyed over it, and when she returns to Walford next week, Phil’s former fiancé Shirley Carter won’t be too chuffed either!

And in fact, it’s because of Shirley (Linda Henry) that Phil calls off the engagement to Sharon (Letitia Dean) fearing that his ex will spill the beans to social services, and if they learn he lied, that’ll be the end of his case.

The plot twist begins when Shirley – who has been staying with her daughter for a few weeks – hears about Sharon and Phil’s engagement, and about their attempts to get custody of baby Lexi…

Intrigued by Phil’s uncharacteristic altruism, Shirley quizzes Sharon, and tells her that she doesn’t think former jailbird, alcoholic and crack user Phil is necessarily the best person in the world to raise a baby.

So when Sharon then lets slip that Lexi is Ben’s daughter, the penny drops for Shirley, who then claims that she thinks Phil is simply out to control both Lexi and Lola’s (Danielle Harold) lives, and doesn’t actually care for the baby girl at all.

She then tells Phil that unless he calls off his faux engagement, she’ll inform social services what’s really going on…

So when a social worker turns up at the pub unexpectedly, Phil assumes that Shirley has carried out her threat, so he confesses that the engagement is over. However, it’s soon evident that the social worker was merely paying an impromptu visit and knew nothing of Shirley or her threats.

However, he then tells Phil that because of the change in his circumstances, the whole custody case will now have to be reassessed.

But while all that’s going on, Phil learns that Ben – who was played by Joshua Pascoe – pleaded guilty in court to the manslaughter of Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison) and received a sentence of just four years…

This prompts him to seek out his foster son Jay (Jamie Borthwick) – who has been sentenced at the same time to community service for his part in covering up Ben’s crime – and the two have a heart to heart that ends with them reconciling amid tears and apologies.

Bless.

But before we see those scenes, the Branning family are of course dealing with the fall out from Lauren and Joey’s car crash, and part of that aftermath will see manipulative Derek blackmailing not only his own son, but his sister-in-law Tanya (Jo Joyner) too!

We have a clip of tonight’s episode for you shortly, in which we see Derek (Jamie Foreman) telling Tanya that he’s quite prepared to change his statement to incriminate Lauren, but first, here’s Jacqueline Jossa and David Witts, who of course play Lauren and Joey, in a behind the scenes look at their big car crash…

And here’s the sneak peek look at tonight’s show…
