EastEnders: Phil Mitchell will propose to Sharon Rickman again in the New Year, but this time, it’s for real! (VIDEO)

EastEnders characters Sharon Rickman and Phil Mitchell have a lot of history, given that she was formerly married to Phil’s brother Grant (Ross Kemp) but went on to have an affair with Phil (Steve McFadden).

And they’ve revisited that romance once or twice over the years, and Phil has always been Sharon’s first port of call in a crisis…

And it was of course the crisis of her split from fiancé John earlier this year – after she ditched him at the altar and he then kidnapped her son Dennis – that brought Sharon back to Walford on Phil’s metaphoric white steed when she called him for help.

Subsequently, Sharon (Letitia Dean) has agreed to help Phil in his attempt to get custody of his granddaughter Lexi by pretending that they’re a couple and that they’re engaged…

However, now that Phil’s former fiancé Shirley Carter is back in Walford, and after revenge on Phil, she’s vowed to do whatever’s necessary to stop Phil getting custody of Lexi.

So when a social worker calls on Phil and Sharon in tonight’s episode, Phil assumes it’s because Shirley has told them about his boozing and drug taking past, but that turns out not to be the case.

But nonetheless, he calls off the sham engagement, but according to Digital Spy today, by the time New Year rolls around, Phil’s going to propose to Sharon again, but for real this time!

We’ll see that proposal in the episode that airs at 8pm on New Year’s Day, and here’s what the BBC say of that visit to the Square…

It’s Lexi’s Christening and the Mitchells congregate to celebrate her special day – however, Lola is horrified when she sees what Phil has been secretly planning.

Alfie does his best to move on from Kat but is he moving too soon?

Ayesha is mortified when she realises she is meant to be meeting her potential future husband today and decides to take drastic action.

Sharon does her best to keep those close to her happy however she is torn when faced with a difficult dilemma.

Joey returns to Albert Square to support Alice after the death of their father and when Lauren hears he is back in Walford she races to find him.

Kim and Zainab plan a surprise dinner party to cheer Denise up – however, will their idea of suitable men be good enough to warm Denise up during her cold lonely nights?

And here’s a sneak peek look at tonight’s episode…

I just don’t think this relationship should be recycled. I don’t think they are a viable couple anymore. Phil belongs with a ‘Shirley type’ now that he is well into middle age. Jack is more a type for Sharon. A slicker, smoother type of bloke.

Phil has always been shady but his ethics have gone into the darkest of gutters which needs a much stronger and ‘earthier’ woman. Maybe a woman more like his mother.

I deffo agree, it would be a crying shame if phil and sharon got back together, also this business with the social services should be made as realistic as poss, because for all those people out there that are doing battle with the social, it gives them the wrong idea and could lead to them losing there kids to the care system, so sort it eastenders

I live in the States so I don’t know the detail of social services in the UK. But these type of shenanigans that are shown on Eastenders would not fly in the US either. Total make believe.

I know these are the soaps but to take this much liberty with reality is giving a false message. And you know there are some young people who may buy into this fantasy.
