EastEnders actress, Rachel Bright, has been given a regular character contract from the BBC soap, the Sun newspaper reports.
Bright, who plays ditzy beautician, Poppy Meadow, in the award-winning soap, has not only had her contract extended for the foreseeable future, but is also going to be made into a more regular character, with bigger storylines and even a new love interest on the horizon.
Fans of the hit soap first saw Poppy arrive in Walford as the best friend of equally ditzy Jody Gold, the fiancée of Darren Miller, back in January last year. She instantly filled a comedy element of the show, with her conversations with Jody being that of absolute comedy gold!
Her character originally left last November, when she left with Jody following the cancelling of her wedding to Darren, but was reintroduced in June this year, despite many critics claiming her part was “bizarre and utterly irrelevant” and “pointless”.
However, it would seem that the British public have warmed to her much more the second time round, with one critic claiming that he considered Poppy to be “perhaps the greatest television bit-part character of the modern age”. Since returning to the soap her character has slotted in nicely to the friendship circle of the younger characters such as Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) and Fat Boy (Ricky Norwood), and was even seen rapping Happy Birthday to Tamwar (Himesh Patel) during an episode earlier this week.
Bright took to social networking site, Twitter, to acknowledge fans who had been sending her messages of congratulations, tweeting: “I’m completely overwhelmed with all this poppy love. Thank you. #Chuffed x”
So, are you glad that Poppy will be a more main character now? And who would you ideally like to see her hook up with? Our money is on Tamwar!
EastEnders can be seen Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights on BBC1/BBC1 HD
