The Mirror reports today that EastEnders icon Sharon Watts is back on the Square with a “dramatic new storyline” heralding her welcome return.
Sharon is of course played by Letitia Dean, who returned to the set of the show on Wednesday, which means we’ll see her on our screens in around six weeks.
And of course, when Sharon returns to Albert Square, it’s with her son Dennis in tow. He is of course Dennis Rickman’s son, who was, technically, Sharon’s half-brother…
However, as Sharon was adopted by Dirty Den and Angie Watts – Den was Dennis’s father – there was no blood tie between the siblings.
Poor Dennis – who was played by the gorgeous Nigel Harman – was murdered by Danny Moon (Jake Maskall) on December 31st 2006 after gangster Johnny Allen ordered his death.
A pregnant Sharon then left the Square, however, it seems she hasn’t been able to stay away from bad lads as her returning storyline sees her enlisting the help of Phil Mitchell – with whom she once had an affair while married to his brother Grant – when her son is kidnapped by her gangster former boyfriend.
The paper adds, “It leads to a dramatic car chase through a forest as she and Phil try to reclaim the snatched youngster.”
A show source said, “Sharon is petrified of losing her son. She has nowhere else to turn so as a last resort she goes to Phil.
“They have a lot of history together and he agrees to help, but it’s no easy task.
“The scenes are going to be emotional and gripping, which is exactly what Letitia wanted when she agreed to come back.
“They will be screened at the end of August and should ensure everyone is talking about the return of ‘Princess’ Sharon.”
The show’s bosses are hoping that Letitia’s return as iconic character Sharon will help boost the show’s flagging ratings.
The source added, “Letitia’s return to the screen cannot come soon enough as far as the bosses are concerned.
“The show has been struggling in recent times and desperately needs a boost in the ratings as well as in morale.
“Letitia has already filmed a few scenes on location and will be at the Elstree studios next week.
“The old characters will love her being around and the new ones will soon get to know her and love hearing her infectious laugh.
“We’re really hoping that her reappearance will bring back some of the lost viewers too.”
I’m so excited to see Letitia as Sharon again and can’t wait to meet Dennis’s son! Are you on the edge of your seat?
