Oh dear, it would seem as though the very fragile world of Jay Mitchell is about to come tumbling down around him in EastEnders when girlfriend, Abi Branning, announces that she is off to Costa Rica on a scholarship.
Jay (Jamie Borthwick) is still feeling the pressures of the harpooning of Heather Trott, and his relationship with Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) has been the only thing holding him together, so when she reveals her plans, he resorts to a pretty desperate measure to get her to stay, a marriage proposal!
As an excited Abi spreads her news, Jay turns to her father, Max (Jake Wood) for advice. After a heart to heart where Max subconsciously tells Jay that if he wants something then he must fight for it, Jay buys the young student an engagement ring, and arranges to meet her at the Arches – who says romance is dead?
Jay pours his heart out to Abi, desperately trying to get her to agree to stay, but when it seems like she is not going to change her mind with words alone, he produces the ring and asks her to marry him!
Abi, who viewers will know has always been more into the relationship than her ginger mechanic boyfriend, leaves Jay shocked when her reaction is nothing like he expected, but fans will have to wait patiently (till next week anyway) to hear what her answer is!
An EastEnders insider told the Daily Star Sunday: “Jay has been trying his best to hold it together ever since he saw his step-brother Ben killing Heather.
“And it’s only been Abi and their relationship that has kept him from going over the edge.
“He’s been able to be normal around her and live his life as best as he can, so the thought of her going off to study fills him with dread.
“He’s happy for her because it’s an amazing opportunity but he doesn’t want to lose her.
“What spurs him into action is a conversation he has with Max about never giving up when you want something so badly.
“They are both young and very different but Jay is determined not to lose her.
“He hopes that she will agree to marry him but everyone will have to wait to see what her answer is going to be.”
Jay witnessed his step/half/adopted brother, Ben Mitchell (Joshua Pascoe) murder the larger than life launderette worker a few months ago, and has since been drawn into the cover up that Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has staged, despite it going against all he believes in.
As the weeks have progressed, his calm over the situation has notably deteriorated, leaving the Mitchell men worried that he may break and reveal their secret at any moment, and this new development might just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back!
One thing is certain, Abi’s parents Max and Tanya (Jo Joyner) are not best impressed with Jay’s proposal, or ultimatum – stay with me or lose me forever, it does get them thinking about their own marital status, and rumour has it that before the month is out, Max will also polish his knee when he decides to ask Tanya to marry him for a second time (I bet the ring is much bigger!)
You can watch the drama unfold next Thursday (14.06) at 7.30pm on BBC One/BBC One HD.
