So, tonight’s the night we have all been waiting for, when Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) will begin her whodunnit storyline as she embarks on an affair with a mystery man in EastEnders.
We reported weeks ago that the storyline was coming where Kat would start seeing someone behind her husband, Alfie’s (Shane Richie) back, and the viewers too, as the man in question was to remain unidentified throughout the plot.
The suspects are listed as Branning brothers Jack, Max (Jake Wood) and Derek (Jamie Foreman) , Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd)and Ray Dixon, and viewers will have watched Kat flirt with every one of them in last night’s episode, but which one will it be?
Max and Derek Branning are probably the least likely outsiders. Max has form when it comes to married women, engaged women, women in general, and has currently been lacking in the bedroom activity department with ex-wife, Tanya (Jo Joyner). However, he recently turned down an affair with Roxy, though extremely tempted, instead opting to do the right thing for once and stand by his ex-wife, who had been battling cancer. Now that things seem to be slowly returning to normal for Max and Tanya in the physical sense, and the fact that they are now engaged, makes him unlikely to be the mystery man, but never say never, and if recent reports are to be believed, Jo Joyner will be taking a break from the show next year, leaving a big opening for a big exit!
As for Derek, he has been single since joining the cast, but is currently trying to rebuild bridges with his estranged family, but more importantly he remains, in our humble opinion, the least likely suspect, because, come on, would you????
Jack (Scot Maslen) on the other hand has been single since his wife was sent to prison, and has a soft spot in Kat’s heart following the devastation of the baby swap storyline, so perhaps their friendship will develop into something more, especially as he is now on the football team .
Kat and Michael Moon have a previous affair under their belts, which resulted in the conception of her son, Tommy, but with him now married to Janine and their premature daughter at death’s door in the hospital, would he have enough time on his hands for an affair? Charlie Brooks, who plays Janine, is set to leave the show for six months later this year in order to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, so could her exit be linked? I think it is safe to say he is the current bookies favourite, but as we know, the obvious is never quite as obvious in soap land!
Ray Dixon is currently seeing Kat’s best friend, Kim (Tameka Empson), and was put on the bench of the football team last night in favour of her husband Alfie. Could this be how she makes it up to him? Ray is a family man and we can’t honestly see him being a home wrecker, but Chucky Venn who plays him has publicly said how he would love for the mystery man to be him, so we shall have to wait and see!
In tonight’s episode viewers will see Kat flirting shamelessly with all the suspects again, in particular with Derek, Max, Jack and Ray ahead of the football team’s first match.
Michael gets her attention also by offering a gift of football shirts for the team, which Kat gratefully accepts. The team end up losing 4-3 at the game, but show there are no hard feelings by inviting rival team the Old Lions and their manager Vivienne Martinez back to The Vic.
Back at the pub viewers will be treated to tender scenes between Kat and all her possible suitors as she shares a moment with Ray in the kitchen when she burns herself on a hot plate and he rushes to her aid. Then Derek defends Kat when Vivienne badmouths her, taking control on her behalf by throwing Vivienne and the entire Old Lions team out. Also Kat enjoys more flirting with Max outside of the pub, and then later shares a long and meaningful hug with Michael upstairs after she hands him some of Tommy’s old baby clothes.
Alfie is feeling a tad left out and so Kat promises him some alone time later, but when she goes upstairs to see him he has passed out drunk so Kat goes back down in to the bar. She is alone in the kitchen when the mystery man enters, obviously to Kat’s delight as she invites him in and gets down to business there and then (we hope the hot plate had been turned off by that point!)
After the deed, Kat retuns behind the bar where all five suspects are sat, but which one was it?
Chucky Venn, who plays Ray Dixon, has admitted that he would love it of his character was Kat’s new man, saying “Kat’s a saucy minx, and what man wouldn’t want to get involved with her?”
“Ray is a loyal, caring father, but we all have our dark sides. There’s a lot the audience hasn’t seen yet, put it that way.”
However Tameka Empson, who plays his girlfriend Kim, said that if it was him then there would almost certainly be a catfight between her and Kat.
“It would handbags and nails at dawn!” she joked. “Kim and Kat are really good friends, so would Kat really go there? I’m playing detective in between takes, but I’m still none the wiser.”
Who do you think Kat’s mystery man was? Leave your theories below!
