The New Year in Walford will see Derek Branning laid to rest, but even from beyond the grave, he’s still causing trouble in the Butcher-Jackson household!
There’s heartache in store for Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) too as she discovers that Alfie (Shane Richie) has asked Roxy to move in with him. More on that in a moment…
But first, on the day of Derek’s funeral, as his sister Carol stands outside the house waiting for the arrival of the cortege, Poppy (Rachel Bright) hands her a letter that was found among Derek’s things.
A confused Carol immediately opens the letter, and on seeing who it’s from, she rushes back into the house, and when her brother Jack (Scott Maslen) goes after her, she tells him that she won’t be going to Derek’s funeral…
When the mourners have gone, Carol tries to ring the number on the letter – it was of course from her former lover David Wicks – but she’s distraught when a recorded message tells her that the number is no longer in use.
There’s worse to come too when, after the funeral, Bianca (Patsy Palmer) confesses to Carol that Liam (James Ford) has been selling off Derek’s stock of dodgy gear.
Carol (Lindsey Coulson) is of course horrified, and she tells Bianca that she must get rid of anything illegal – given she’s on probation – and a chastened Bianca agrees, telling Liam that he mustn’t sell anymore of Derek’s dodgy gear.
However, soon after Liam has sent a text to his partner in crime – who’s been helping him sell the goods – to say he wants out, a shadowy figure deletes the message and goes to the stash of Derek’s dodgy stock.
Meanwhile, on New Year’s Eve, while she’s upstairs collecting Tommy, Kat’s distraught when she overhears Alfie inviting an excited Roxy (Rita Simons) and Amy to move in with him.
She rushes off to collect her things from Michael’s (Steve John Shepherd) but he warns her to be cautious, explaining that Kat has always been ‘the one’ for Kat.
Will Roxy take any notice? Is Michael right? Or are Kat and Alfie over for good this time?
