EastEnders fans will of course know that last year, Dot Branning (June Brown) left Walford after what had been yet another annus horribilis for the downtrodden granny…

She wanted time away from Walford and therefore headed off to stay with friends, however, she’s headed back to the Square, but as we’ll see in a Red Button special tomorrow night – which is entitled Dorothy Branning: The Next Chapter – Dot’s initially in no hurry to come back to Albert Square.

Until that is her step-granddaughter Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) tracks her down and convinces her that the good ship Branning needs her at the helm to guide the troubled relations back to some kind of normality…

But as Dot will discover, things for the Branning family have gone from bad to worse since she absented herself, what with Derek’s demise, Lauren’s romance with her cousin Joey, and of course, Max’s wife Kirsty (Kierston Wareing) having installed herself on the Square!

And poor Dot’s going to learn the majority of that shocking news during a hastily organised dinner in honour of her return to Walford, and it seems the only bit of good news for Dot is that Jack (Scott Maslen) is engaged to Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean).

However, things at home aren’t good either because Dot’s set to be horrified that in her absence, her lodger Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) has let standards at Dot’s house slip.

Dot will be livid when she finds a discarded pair of boxer shorts down the side of the sofa, and further inflamed by Cora’s couldn’t care less attitude to her landlady’s outrage, Dot decides she wants Cora out!

Cora of course pleads with Dot to rethink her decision, telling her that she’ll be homeless if Dot kicks her out, but it seems Mrs Branning Snr has returned with a steely core, and she doesn’t want to listen to Cora’s promises or pleas.

Will she really chuck Cora out? And what will she have to say about Joey (David Witts) and Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) being an item? And how is she going to react to cuckoo in the next, Kirsty?
