EastEnders star David Witts says of his celebrity status, “I’m very much out of my comfort zone”
As fans of EastEnders star David Witts – who of course plays Joey Branning – he won the National Television Award for Best Newcomer on Wednesday night…
However, modest David has revealed that although he was very flattered to have won the award, he’s something of a fish out of water when it comes to the limelight.
Speaking to the Radio Times after winning the award, David said, “I was very nervous coming. I’m very much out of my comfort zone being a ‘celebrity’ for the night.
“But it’s an amazing experience.”
If you watched the award ceremony, you’ll know that when David thanked his girlfriend for her support, audience members jokingly booed – because of course, he’s something of a heartthrob – to which David said, “Don’t boo! That’s rude. How can you boo her? She’s beautiful!”
However, the potentially awkward moment passed, and back with the interview, David revealed that he feels he’s been very lucky to have had such a pivotal role in many of EastEnders’ big storylines.
He said, “I’ve been very lucky. I got gifted a wonderful storyline – it’s been a screen filler for the past few months now.
“I’ve been able to showcase an awful lot. It’s a huge responsibility, but I’m enjoying what I’m doing.”
Here’s a reminder of David and his co-star Jacqueline Jossa – who plays Joey’s cousin and lover Lauren Branning – behind the scenes as they filmed the car crash that aired late last year…
