EastEnders star Gillian Wright is BACK as Jean Slater! But sadly, not for long…

Earlier today, we reported that EastEnders star Michael French has once again quit the show and his role as David Wicks…

However, even as the virtual ink was drying on that report, the BBC announced that Gillian Wright was to return to the long-running soap to reprise the role of bipolar disorder sufferer Jean Slater!

Which is great news for fans of the character and of course fans of Gillian’s – and I count myself very much in the number of both – but sadly, her return is not a permanent one.

The BBC announced the news on their official EastEnders website, writing, “Surprise! EastEnders favourite Jean Slater, will be coming back to the Square for a short stint.”

Fans of the show will no doubt recall that we last saw Gillian as Jean back in September of last year as she drove off into the sunset with new love Ollie, who was played by Tony O’Callaghan…

Her return is expected to tie-in with the climax of the trial of Jean’s daughter Stacey (Lacey Turner) over the murder of Archie Mitchell.

Of her comeback, Gillian told the BBC, “I feel very honoured to be asked to reprise my role as Jean Slater, for a short while.

“The storyline promises to be challenging and exciting!

“I look forward to playing again with old friends and new and to pick up the special relationship between Stacey and Jean.”

The show’s Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added, “We’re so pleased to have Gillian back with us to reprise her role as Jean Slater, albeit briefly.

“Stacey and Jean have such a rich, loving but difficult history.”

He added, “There’s still so much to plumb between them as we delve deeper into what it means to have bipolar disorder as a mother but also as a daughter.

“There are some truly heartbreaking scenes ahead for our audience”.

Are you excited that Gillian’s coming back to the show?

Let us know, but for now, here’s a look at what’s ahead in the next visit to Albert Square:
