EastEnders star Jake Wood on playing Max Branning and Tanya’s marriage proposal!
The relationship between Max Branning and his on-off wife Tanya has always been a fiery one…
But it’s survived so many hurdles it could go for gold in the Olympics! There have been affairs, lies, illness, and even an attempted murder or two, but still, the couple always seem to end up with each other.
And the culmination of Tanya’s (Jo Joyner) cancer storyline saw them together again, albeit with some issues in their sex life, but as we’re about to see, Tanya’s going to get over those issues in a bout of lust with Max at the car lot!
Not only that, the surge in passion between them prompts Tanya to ask Max to marry her again, and today, in TV Choice magazine, Jake Wood – who of course plays Max – has been talking about his character’s reaction to that…
He began by saying, “When Max is good, he’s very supportive and loving. But, obviously, he’s got lots of demons, as we know.
“For me, it just feels very well rounded and a joy to play. I like playing all sides of Max though.
“I like it when he’s not so good, and I really like Max and Tanya as a couple. I think they’re very strong together.”
Then of Tanya’s shock proposal after she and Max do the do in the car lot’s portakabin – erm, ew – Jake said, “Well, we’ve seen with Tanya’s cancer storyline that the writers have really explored this side of the fallout from it.
“One side of it was that their love life suffered, and has continued to suffer. It’s not so much physically now that Tanya can’t, but it’s more psychological.
“She finds it difficult. But this has great significance for both of them.”
And although he wouldn’t reveal if Max says yes or no to Tanya’s proposal, Jake added, “It would be nice to see them getting re-married and living happily ever after.
“I think they deserve to be happy, because when things are going well, they’re really good together.”
He added, “There’s some really exciting stuff coming out later this year. We’ve also been given an outline for next year Brannings-wise, and all I can say is that I think it’s going to be some of the best stuff we’ve had from them to date.
“So I’m really excited about it.”
But while Max and Tanya are revisiting their passionate side, and considering taking to the altar together again, their teenaged daughter Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) is facing a tough choice; marry boyfriend Jay Mitchell (Jamie Borthwick) or go to Costa Rica to study.
Of that plotline, Jake said, “Obviously, Max is very protective of his daughters, as we’ve seen, and he hasn’t really taken to Jay.
“But generally, I think he’s also keen for Abi to take up this opportunity to go to Costa Rica on this Eco trip.
“And he doesn’t want her relationship with Jay to get in the way, or for her to make the wrong decisions.
“So he’d rather that his daughter went and thinks Jay might have proposed just to keep her from going. So Max is very anti that idea, of course.”
Would you like to see Max and Tanya remarry? And what about Jay and Abi? Way too young or a fairytale romance?
