EastEnders star Laurie Brett says the show’s bosses won’t “bump Jane off”

As fans of EastEnders will probably know, Laurie Brett – who plays Jane Beale – is back on the show at the moment, but she won’t be staying long, given that she wants to spend time with her baby daughter Erin.

Laurie temporarily left the show earlier this year on maternity leave, and although her character has apparently got a lot of exciting storylines lined up, she will only stay for a few months.

However, Digital Spy report that Laurie told This Morning viewers that the show’s bosses don’t intend to “bump Jane off” so the door is open for a more lengthy return in the future.

Speaking about her decision to rejoin the cast only temporarily, Laurie said, “It’s such a hamster wheel to run on, EastEnders…

“It’s such a massive machine and the hours are so long. So I’ve decided just to go back for a few months and give myself a bit of flexibility after that.

“I don’t want to miss the whole first year and everything that happens with the baby within that.

“I think that, if I’ve waited this long to have one, then I should enjoy it.”

She then added, “I’m going back for a few months and they’re not going to bump Jane off, I don’t think, so the door will be left open for something in the future.”

And of the prospect of Jane possibly having a fully fledged romance with Masood, who’s played by Nitin Ganatra, Laurie said, “Obviously the spark’s there. I think every woman is sitting at home thinking, ‘Go on, Jane!’

“So now they’re both single and obviously there’s things that have been spoken and said. Now they’re single, perhaps something might come of it.

“I think it’s brilliant that Jane, who is the normal woman – she’s not the glamourpuss or anything – does get these moments where she gets the guy.

“I think there’s a lot that will unfurl over the next few months.”

Of how she’s coping with being a mum, Laurie said, “It’s going really well – she’s amazing and I just can’t believe it. The time goes so fast.

“It’s an incredible time that we’ve had with her, and my mum and dad didn’t think they’d ever be grandparents, so they’re over the moon.”

Before landing the role of Jane in EastEnders, Laurie had toured with Circo Magico Italiano, a travelling circus, in Mexico and Central America, as well as playing the role of a prostitute in Les Misérables.

She made her TV acting debut on London’s Burning in 1992 and joined ‘Enders in 2004.
