EastEnders star Rita Simons reveals her shock at being branded an “abuser” towards her six year old daughter! What the hell?!

by Lynn Connolly

As fans of EastEnders star Rita Simons – who of course plays Roxy Mitchell – may know, Rita has twin girls, Jaimee and Maiya, with her husband Theo Silveston…

She and Theo of course dote on their gorgeous girls, and like every parent, they want the girls to have the best life they can, so when it was discovered that little Maiya was deaf, Rita and Theo consulted with specialists to see if anything could be done to help her hearing.

However, when it was revealed in the press that Rita plans to go ahead with an operation for Maiya – that will see surgeons placing a cochlear implant in the child’s ears – several people accused Rita and Theo of doing wrong by their little girl, and one person even called Rita an “abuser”.

Speaking to Hello! magazine, Rita explained, “[The criticism] comes mainly from people who firmly believe deafness should be embraced rather than treated as a physical deficiency that should be corrected…

“I totally respect their point of view. But when a 19-year-old girl told me I was an ‘abuser’ to let my child have a cochlear implant, I was horrified and deeply hurt.”

Rita added, “I would throw myself in front of a bus for my girls – and yet I was being judged by someone who didn’t know me or understand my emotional stance at all.

“We know it’s not a miracle cure and her hearing won’t be perfect. But, in time, her brain will process what it is hearing and compensate, making sounds more familiar to her.

“All we want to do is give her back what she has lost and help to expand her life…

“If you’ve got the chance to give your child the gift of sound, why would you not do that?”

I absolutely agree with Rita and I have to say, I think it goddamn awful that she was called an “abuser” over it!

If I was in Rita and Theo’s situation, I’d do exactly the same. For me, what her critics are saying is akin to remarking, “Oh I won’t have my child’s broken leg treated – I’ll just let her learn to adjust to life with a broken leg!”

What say you?

Here’s a look at a documentary series that featured Rita talking about her girls and Maiya’s deafness…

I am astounded that some people would say this is abuse to a child, The parents (no matter who they are), just want the best for their child. Get down the local supermarket and see parents shouting and even clipping children around the ears, now THATS abuse.
