It’s no secret that Ed Sheeran has been one big success story this year, particularly after the success of his second studio album ‘X’ (pronounced multiply) which was released earlier in the year.
And while there have been a host of other albums released from British artists, none have come close in terms of sales figures to that of the ‘Lego House’ musician.
The Official Charts Company have today confirmed the top 10 best-sellers of 2014 so far, and Ed Sheeran sits very comfortably at the top of the list, taking the spot from fellow Brits, Coldplay.
According to sales data from the Official Charts Company, ‘X’ has now been certified 2x Platinum by the BPI who are the music trade body that represents record labels in the UK.
‘X’ became his second chart-topping album after it was released in June. During its first week of sales, it sold 182,000 copies and to date, has shifted more than 634,000 copies.
Commenting on the news, Sheeran said: “I’m so happy people have been enjoying my album so much – great to hear that it’s still the biggest seller of the year and has now gone double Platinum too. Looking forward to playing it live to my UK fans when the tour starts next week!”
The Official Charts Company have also confirmed, as shown below, that British music has been incredibly popular in the charts in 2014 so far, with 90% of the top 10 being UK acts.
In second place, just behind Ed is Sam Smith with his chart-topping debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’, which has also overtaken Coldplay in this quarter.
Since the album was released back in May (debuting at the top of the charts) it hasn’t moved from the Top 5 and to date has sold 487,000 copies.
At the half-way point of 2014, Coldplay led the best-sellers so far list, but have now fallen two places into Number (3) with their latest released ‘Ghost Stories’.
‘Ghost Stories’ was also released in May and became the band’s sixth chart-topping album and has so far sold a staggering 470,000 copies.
Scottish singer Paolo Nutini is in fourth place on the best-sellers of 2014 so far list with ‘Caustic Love’ which has sold 440,000 copies since its release.
Finally, in fifth place is Paloma Faith, who claims the best selling female album of the year so far with ‘A Perfect Contradiction’ after shifting 342,000 copies.
The only international star to feature on the Top 10 list is American singer-songwriter and producer Pharrell Williams with his new album ‘G I R L’.
