Emmerdale at 40!!! What a night – 2 weddings, 2 Dingle births, and Carl King is MURDERED!!!

by Anna Howell

So, tonight has been the night that all Emmerdale fans (including us) have been waiting for, so what happened in the live anniversary episode?

Fans of the hit ITV1 soap will know how we left the village with both Katie (Sammy Winward)and Declan (Jason Merelles) and Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Dan (Liam Fox) tying the knot in yesterday’s instalment. However, trouble was lurking behind the pews in the forms of Carl King (Tom Lister) and Megan Macey (Gaynor Faye).

In last night’s episode viewers saw Megan gate-crash Declan’s wedding to Katie after discovering that all her share of the festival profits had gone to her brother’s new wife.

Not once, but twice did she try to cause a scene, each time being shot down, not by Declan, but Katie, in quite spectacular style.

When Katie finally filled her in on the whole plot, Megan turned to the real enemy in her life, her son Robbie (Jamie Shelton) who was in on it from a few days ago, but still caused not only a tremendously dramatic scene at the lavish reception, but then pushed Katie’s face in her own wedding cake too (with that much money in the bank, who the hell would care?).

Elsewhere, poor Gennie (Sian Reese-Williams) had been looking increasingly uncomfortable since Monday, so it was no surprise to us when she went into labour at Chas and Dan’s  wedding reception, with her fiancée, Nikhil (Rik Makarem) passing out at the first sight of blood!

And it would have been really noticed too, if the bride, Chas, hadn’t just left her new husband high and dry, attempting to leg it in his old faithful camper van!

Of course, nothing stops a run-away-bride much like her entire reception, including her gormless groom, being evacuated in front of her get-a-way vehicle on route!

If that wasn’t enough, Debbie (Charley Webb) went in to labour with her saviour sibling for her sick daughter, Sarah. It was a race against time to get her to the hospital in time to get Sarah’s magic potion extracted from the new-born in time to save the wee girl.

Unfortunately for Debbie, Cameron (Dominic Power)  was otherwise engaged, as he hunted out Carl to tell him finally that enough was enough!

However, when he found Carl, he had already been bludgeoned over the head with a brick that Chas Dingle had been branding about, but that didn’t stop him making the final blow to end his life!

So there you have it, two more Dingles enter the world tonight, baby Jack Sugden, and little Miss we-will-know-when-Nikhil-finally-comes-round-Sharma, but the real question firmly remains with just who will take the blame for the murder of Carl King, especially as we all saw him attempt to send Debbie the picture of Chas and Cameron together before he kicked the bucket!!!!

What we do know, whole-heartedly, is that Emmerdale surpassed all expectations and broke so many records tonight, giving us a thrill not normally possible without a fairground!!!

The acting was amazing, in particular Tom Lister and Dominic Power, not to mention the amazing birth scenes of Charley Webb and Sian Reese-Williams, who were both utterly flawless!!!

All 3 main stream soaps have attempted a live episode now, but Emmerdale, who avoided a huge stunt like a tram crash, or a roof top jump, managed to actually surpass all expectations and records tonight in what, we at Unreality TV consider to be, the BEST live soap episode EVER!!!!

Watch the rest of Emmerdale’s 40th anniversary celebrations every night this week, at 7pm on ITV1/ITV1 HD.
