Emmerdale: Gemma Oaten says her co-stars “completely brought me into their family”

Emmerdale’s Gemma Oaten has revealed that her co-stars made her feel welcome from the minute she arrived last summer to begin playing the role of Rachel Breckle.

Hull-born Gemma told the PA that one of the first things her co-stars did was make fun of her accent, which made her relax in the new surroundings.

She said, “From the first day I walked in they started taking the mickey out of my accent and putting me down, messing my hair up, getting me in headlocks.

“They just completely brought me into their family. It’s been brilliant.”

Gemma has of course been part of several major storylines since we first saw her on screen last July, including Rachel being Marlon Dingle’s confidante over his affair with Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) and her character’s involvement in the elder abuse plotline…

However, though Rachel is not-so-secretly in love with Marlon (Mark Charnock), Gemma hopes there’s romance ahead for her character, but it seems that’s unlikely.

She said, “Everyone talks about romance between Marlon and Rachel, they’re lovely together.

“I’d like to do some more stuff with James Hooton who plays Sam (Dingle), but at the moment I know she’s starting to take a little interest in David (Metcalfe, played by Matthew Wolfenden).

“But that’s possibly not going to go her way.”

And finally, Gemma said, “There’s big stuff coming up but it’s not happy stuff. The thing I love about Rachel is she’s such a mix…

“I get the scenes that are just hilarious, the stuff she comes out with, but I’m also getting to show the sensitive side and there’s some really gritty stuff coming up.”

I’d love it if Rachel had a makeover on the show! As you can see in the pic above, Gemma’s gorgeous, but as Rachel, she’s always in grotty tracksuits and looks more plain than any Jane anywhere!
