This week in Emmerdale, Amy Wyatt (Chelsea Halfpenny) is going to give birth to a little boy, alone and terrified in the village graveyard…
When the baby is born, Amy, in a blind panic, wraps him in a sweater and leaves him in the village phone box, keeping watch from a safe distance to see that someone comes along and finds him.
And that someone is Hazel Rhodes (Pauline Quirke).
Pauline has been telling Soaplife about the dramatic storyline, and what happens when her character discovers the newborn.
She said that on finding the baby, Hazel immediately calls an ambulance, and then as she’s rushing home to warm the baby up, she runs into Zak (Steve Halliwell) and Lisa (Jane Cox) who rush to help…
Pauline said, “You see her reaction to this tiny baby who’s not moving and doesn’t seem to have any signs of life…
“But then, thank God, there is some movement. But he’s only just alive and in a bad way.
“Hazel, Lisa and Zak do their best to keep the baby as warm as they can until the ambulance comes along.
“It’s very dramatic and very sad.”
Pauline went on to say that at first, it doesn’t even occur to anyone that Amy is the baby’s mum, but it doesn’t take long for the truth to come out.
Of that, Pauline said, “She’s surprised and concerned. She later asks Amy how the baby is doing and Amy replies she’s putting him up for adoption.
“Hazel’s not at all judgemental. She says Amy must do what she feels is best for the baby.
“She’s speaking from her heart.”
Amy then confesses that Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) is the baby’s father, prompting Hazel to go and confront Cain.
How he’ll react to the news remains to be seen, but these scenes are among the last that Pauline will film, since she’s leaving the show to join a stage version of ‘80s sitcom, Birds of a Feather.
Of her time on Emmerdale, Pauline said, “Oh, I’ve absolutely loved it! I got tearful just finding out when my last day was.
“It has been the most incredible 18 months.”
I’m going to miss Pauline, but can’t wait to see how Cain reacts to finding out about his son!
