As fans of Emmerdale will know, Chas Dingle has proposed to village joke Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) having been dating him for what amounts to a few days!
We viewers of course know that Chas’s mad proposal is merely a knee jerk reaction to the fact that Cameron Murray (Dominic Power) ditched her – just as they were planning to flee the village to start a new life together – to go back to his girlfriend, Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) who is of course Chas’s niece…
Now of course I get that at the heart of the Chas and Dan plotline is the fact that Chas (Lucy Pargeter) is hurt, fragile and desperately wanting a man who is reliable and who loves her unconditionally, but Dan? Really?
It’s not even as if Chas is your traditional spinster wall flower type, nor is she over the hill or otherwise booking a permanent spot on the dusty shelf, and yes, she has of course been in some car crash relationships, so one could understand her need for stability…
But again, Dan? Is it really likely, even a little bit?
And is it furthermore likely that after mere weeks of knowing him, and less of being in a relationship with him, that she’d propose to him?
I personally find it hard to suspend my disbelief quite that much…
However, in an upcoming episode, when Chas – clearly lies – and tells Dan that she is in fact in love with him, he will accept her proposal and plans for their wedding will begin.
I think therefore it’s safe to assume that the marriage will be one of those that the series producer, Stuart Blackburn, hinted about while teasing what’s ahead in the show’s anniversary celebrations during October.
But what do you think? If this were real life, would somebody like Chas even seriously look twice at Dan, much less propose to him?
