As fans of Emmerdale will surely know, Bernice Blackstock – daughter of Rodney Blackstock and Diane Sugden – is headed back to the village, and ITV have now revealed more details of the storyline that brings her running back to her mum…
Apparently, Bernice (Samantha Giles) arrives at The Woolpack out of the blue, much to mum Diane’s (Elizabeth Estensen) surprise, but it quickly transpires – after Bernice bursts into tears – that this is no social call and Bernice has in fact left her husband.
However, what Bernice doesn’t immediately admit is that she’s been having an affair, which is something she has a previous history of! She was of course formerly married to vicar Ashley Thomas (John Middleton) with whom she has a daughter Gabby, and their marriage ended after Bernice had an affair with pub chef Carlos…
This happened in 2004, and soon afterwards, Bernice left the village and left her daughter with Ashley. He of course subsequently married Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) and she raised Gabby as if she were her own child.
And apropos of Ashley and Laurel, both of them are worried when they hear that Bernice is back, fearing that she could adversely affect the already troubled – and troublesome – Gabby. However, Bernice assures them that she has no intention of interfering with how they raise Gabby, but she also informs them that she won’t be taking orders from either of them about her own daughter.
We’ll see Bernice’s dramatic return on Tuesday, November 20 and Wednesday, November 21 at 7pm on ITV1, but in the meantime, Charlotte Bellamy has told Inside Soap magazine that there are going to be some serious tensions between her character Laurel and returnee Bernice.
She said, “Laurel will be jealous in the sense that Gabby will think Bernice is fantastic.
“Laurel has suddenly become the monster in Gabby’s life, so how she copes with Bernice’s return is the million dollar question.
“I’m sure there will be fireworks, put it that way!”
Here’s a reminder of the last time we saw Bernice in the village…
