Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle has – until recently – always been a bad lad who’s constantly on the lookout for mischief and who never shies away from a fight…
However, since the infamous Judgement Day attack, which saw Cain left fighting for his life after his own dad Zak (Steve Halliwell) beat him nearly to death, Cain has been changing. He’s mellowed out considerably, and has become a caring dad to his daughter Debbie (Charley Webb) and an even more caring granddad to her poorly daughter Sarah.
He’s even struck up a truce with his ex, Charity Sharma (Emma Atkins) for the sake of their daughter, and he’s forgiven his dad for attacking him!
And as Jeff Hordley – who of course plays Cain – has revealed in an interview with the Mirror, when his character reignites his romance with Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) his thoughts turn to settling down and making a long-term partner of Mucky Moira…
Jeff began by explaining, “When they [Cain and Moira] had the initial affair a while back, Moira meant absolutely nothing to Cain.
“He was in a terrible place after being dumped by Charity and he was going through the women in the village like a steamroller.
“Cain totally lost the plot and he tore the Barton family apart.”
When asked, “Has Moira forgiven Cain for his part in John’s tragic death?” Jeff replied, “In Moira’s mind, if she makes things work with Cain this time, John will not have died in vain.
“It will prove that the original fling she and Cain had was based on something real after all.”
And of what drives the romance forward, Jeff said, “She has always appreciated aspects of his personality that other people in Emmerdale just don’t see.
“Right now, she’s the one person who recognises how torn Cain is between his daughter, Debbie, and his sister, Chas, whom he still cares about despite everything she has done…
“Cain finds it therapeutic to talk to Moira about that stuff. They’ve always had great chemistry and that’s what draws them back together, but this time Cain is genuinely ready to find a partner.
“He wants some normality in his life.”
In another interview, this time with Soaplife, about the Cain and Moira storyline, Jeff explained how the couple reignite their passion.
He said, “She starts to play Cain at his own game and he doesn’t like it. This is when he realises his feelings for her are deeper than he thought…
“It’s his birthday and he wants to see her. He feels if he’s with Moira he won’t have to talk about or think about the whole thing that’s going on with Debbie and the grandchildren.
“Moira’s like a safe haven for him. And as much as he doesn’t want to talk about his problems, he does open up to her. She’s like Cain’s therapist – mental and sexual!
“There’s chemistry between them so things start to happen when they kiss, but Cain wants to keep their affair quiet.
“He realises it’s a potential nightmare for Moira and, if [her son] Adam finds out, he’ll cause problems.”
And finally, when asked if Cain could fall for Moira, Jeff said, “Their passion might lead to a love affair, which I think is always very interesting because, for Cain, it means he opens himself up and becomes extremely vulnerable.
“That’s dangerous for him.”
Would you like to see Moira and Cain in a full on relationship? I would. I think it’d be really interesting to see not only how they are together long-term, but also how the rest of the village would react to them as a couple!
Here’s a reminder of their former passion…
