Emmerdale: Mark Charnock reveals that when Paddy’s bullied by yobs, Marlon rushes to help him, adding “a few of the old feelings kick in”

by Lynn Connolly

As fans of Emmerdale will of course know, Paddy Kirk and Marlon Dingle were once the best of best mates…

Even the fact that Marlon’s pregnant girlfriend Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) dumped poor Marlon to live with Paddy (Dominic Brunt) wasn’t enough to break the BFFs up.

However, when Paddy and Rhona made it clear that their future lies in New Zealand, and that they would take Marlon’s son Leo with them, pub chef Marlon put his foot down and took out a court order to prevent his ex taking his son overseas.

But of course, that has resulted in a bitter feud between Paddy and Marlon, and as we saw last week, they both ended up getting arrested for brawling on the morning that Paddy and Rhona were going to sneak off to NZ without telling anybody…

Rhona ended up going anyway, and of course taking Leo, but as Paddy had inadvertently punched a police officer, he was charged with assault. Later this week, we’ll find out that he’s given a community service order by way of punishment, and it’s this the prompts Marlon to discover he still has some affection for his old mate.

Speaking to Soaplife, Mark Charnock who of course plays Marlon, explained what happens.

He said, “After what Paddy was planning to do [take Leo to NZ for two years], Marlon felt like their friendship had never been.

“But when he sees the tyres on Paddy’s car have been let down by bullies doing Community Service, a few of the old feelings kick in…

“He instinctively wants to help and gives him a lift.”

However, when asked if Marlon would offer Paddy any help or sympathy if he had any idea that the vet’s planning on also secretly leaving the village to join Rhona and Leo in NZ, Mark said, “He’d be crushed. If Paddy was to do that, it would be a real statement of intent and for Marlon it would be the final betrayal.

“Marlon would face a long legal process to get Leo back. It would be a shocking thing for Paddy to do; he’s usually such a careful, law-abiding guy.”

And of course, as we reported yesterday, given that Laurel and her kids Gabby and Arthur are about to move in with Marlon, sorting Paddy out isn’t his only major problem right now.

Mark said, “Marlon and Laurel are under a lot of pressure and in some ways they’re in a similar situation. Both are facing custody battles…

“But they love each other and are supporting each other in a big way.”

And while recapping how come Laurel moves into Marlon’s house, Mark said, “It’s Marlon’s idea and he’s excited about it.

“For a start, it solves a lot of practical things – Laurel’s having problems paying her rent. It’s not just for that, though.

“They’ve fought a long battle so they can be together and, in his heart of hearts, he feels that it will work.”

However, Gabby’s far from happy about the move…

Mark continued, “Marlon’s concerned about her reaction, although he doesn’t let on to Laurel.

“He knows that Gabby’s not Laurel’s biological daughter, which could present them with more legal problems.

“Marlon’s done lots of research about custody of children and knows this could be an issue. He’ll fight all the way and do all he can to make Gabby happy.

“He doesn’t want to steal the kids from Ashley, but he does want them to be a family unit.

“Leo and Laurel are equally important. He wants to make a family unit and Leo is part of that.

“He’s desperate to get his son back while Laurel is the love of his life.”

Aww bless him. I hope things start to improve for the poor lad!
