After one of the most tragic year’s any soap character has ever seen, Emmerdale’s Debbie Dingle is set to start the New Year with a new look, and a new agenda!
Last year Debbie (Charley Webb) had to deal with her daughter, Sarah, being diagnosed with a potentially terminal condition, forcing Debbie to resort to the extreme measure of sleeping with her ex, Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher) in order to conceive a ‘saviour sibling’ to provide the young girl with a match for a life-saving transplant.
Whilst carrying the child Debbie leaned heavily on her fiancé, Cameron Murray (Dominic Powers) but, unbeknown to her, he was having an affair with Debbie’s best friend, and aunt, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter).
Now all the secrets are finally out, Debbie is faced with a life alone with two kids, watching the man she still loves playing loves young dream with Chas, and Charley Webb, who plays Debbie in the award-winning soap has revealed that her character is about to transform into the same sort of cynical, dark person as her dad, Cain (Jeff Hordley), in order to survive.
Speaking to Radio Times, Charley who is engaged to co-star Matthew Wolfenden who plays David Metcalfe in real life, said:
“She becomes very business minded and has this complete change overnight. She changes her look, her hair, her appearance – and it’s all about making money for the kids. Nobody’s ever going to screw her over again.”
To go with her new hairstyle Debbie decides she needs a new money-making scheme and decides upon launching a new courier business. Enlisting the help of village newcomer, Dom (Wil Johnson), she soon realises that his business nature is far from clean as he uses his motor bike to transport drugs, but when things heat up between the two, it seems she might ignore her usually very strong principles.
“Well, as soon as she hears that the courier business is dodgy, it makes her more interested! She thinks, ‘bloody hell! If it’s dodgy, there’s got to be some serious money to be made’. And she’s not scared of getting into dodgy stuff. For years, she’s watched her mum and dad do what they want and get what they want. And now she thinks, ‘right. That’s it. I’m going to be like that’.
“Debbie has a one-track mind at the moment. She’s just thinking of becoming a mini Cain. Her heart is completely broken and the only way she can get through it is to put on this massive front and pretend that everything’s all right.”
Part of her plan is to get Dom onside, which means going all out on a charm-offensive:
“She doesn’t flirt at first. It starts out as business. But once she realises that he might have something to offer her, she starts to bring in the flirting. Just completely using him. She’s got no interest in him whatsoever.”
“She’s basically planning on stealing all the contacts of the company that Dom works for and screwing them over by planting drugs. So she sleeps with him so she can steal his keys. She knows they’re already involved in drugs, so she’s planning on them getting caught.”
Two people who won’t be happy with Debbie’s new plan, however, are her parents, Cain and Charity (Emma Atkins), find out how they react when the drama unfolds in Emmerdale next week!
