Emmerdale Spoilers: Gemma Oaten discusses Rachel Breckle exit!
Following the announcement that she is to leave Emmerdale this year, Gemma Oaten has spoken out about her character’s exit storyline, praising the show!
As we previously reported last year, Oaten is set to bow out of the hugely popular ITV soap, in which she has played Rachel Breckle since 2011, in what is said to be a dramatic exit storyline.
Thankfully the show writers have not opted to kill the much-loved character off, meaning that a door has been left open should she wish to return in the future (fingers and toes crossed!), but Gemma Oaten, the actress who plays Rachel, has been explaining to BBC Radio Leeds how, despite her exit not being fatal, it would still be devastating!
Discussing the exit on the radio show, Oaten revealed:
“Obviously for me, as the viewers know, I’m not there anymore. My exit has been absolutely amazing to film.
“The people that I got to work with so closely like Emma Atkins, who plays Charity – she’s such a phenomenal actress and so generous with the time she gives on set.
“It’s been an absolute rollercoaster for me but I feel that I go out on an absolute high and the door’s wide open.”
Rachel’s exit storyline is set to coincide with the current plot which has seen Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Declan Macey (Jason Merelles) framing Rachel’s fiancé, Sam Dingle (James Hooton) for an arson attack at Home Farm, on which Oaten continued:
“Charity has seen that she can get 50% of the insurance money and also set up her own cousin, which also implicates Rachel and Archie.
“It’s quite dark, really, and Rachel and Sam are literally little pawns in her plan. It’s been brilliant to play but poor Gaynor [Faye] is in her hospital bed thinking her brother wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. She woke up last night and she was defending Declan.
“The viewers will see how at the start Declan’s not wanting to be part of this plan, but slowly but surely Declan is manipulated into going into it and almost becomes as bad as Charity.”
Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV1 / ITV1 HD – Watch an interview with Gemma Oaten discussing her exit in the clip below:
